Kurylenko: a Different Kind of Bond Girl
Olga Kurylenko may be a relative newcomer in Hollywood, but when chatting with the press she has the coy, teasing part down pat. When asked during a set visit last week why her character, known simply as Camille, is assisting James Bond in the new film "Quantum of Solace," she wasn't very forthcoming.
"There is probably a reason," Kurylenko says with a smile.
Pestered for more, Kurylenko succumbs and adds, "She's driven by revenge. And for the whole movie she's just determined. She's not the girl who is trying to please. When men get in her way, she quickly figures them out. But if they can't serve her in a certain way? She just wants to get rid of them very quickly."

On this day, Kurylenko has been shooting an action scene in the Chilean desert with Bond himself, Daniel Craig, and the film's villain, Dominic Greene, played by Mathieu Amalric ("The Diving Bell and the Butterfly"). One shot in particular finds Camille jumping from the top of the European Space Agency's Southern Observatory main building (standing in for an eco hotel in the movie) to the deck one story below. Much to her chagrin, her stunt double stands in for a portion of the stunt that Kurylenko had nailed completely the day before. She says, "I don't know why they didn't get me to do the first move because basically she did the first move and I did the second move."
Well, even with a wire for safety, Kurylenko shouldn't be disappointed. Her contribution looked pretty risky to this writer. And while the actress best known to American audiences for her role in last fall's "Hitman" has had her share of bumps and bruises, she says her two toughest scenes are yet to come.
"Actually, what is left to shoot is the most important," Kurylenko says. "One is gonna be this scene where Camille opens up and you really know what she's about and what she's driven by. And another one, is when she does get to her goal. I don't want to give away too much, [but it] is more of an emotional scene, but not over-the-top."
Joining a long, sexy and eclectic line of Bond girls that includes Ursula Andress, Jane Seymour, Tanya Roberts, Famke Janssen, Teri Hatcher, Denise Richards, Halle Berry and Eva Green, the 28-year-old Ukrainian knows that, no matter how tough her character is, the fans are going to expect some romantic fireworks between her and 007. There had been some question as to whether Camille and Bond actually engage in that sort of relationship in "Quantum," but Kurylenko quickly dismisses those rumors.
"No, we are connected. We are very connected," Kurylenko says.
And while she won't admit to having kissed her leading man yet, she does tease a journalist when asked about whether there will be a sex scene in the film, responding with, "Oh, you didn't know we were doing a sex movie? What do you guys want these days? There is always a romance involved. There is no story without a romance."
Glad that's cleared up.
'Quantum of Solace' is schedule to open worldwide November 7, 2008.
